The perfect bike would be a Honda Rebel.  Totally basic 250cc starter bike.  Very easy to ride and inexpensive.  Second best would be a Suzuki Savage, a 650cc single cylinder.  Also, PLEASE take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation rider safety course.  It's worth it and you'll learn plenty.  Good luck.

After you take the MSF rider's course check out a Suzuki Boulevard s40.  It has a low seat and it is very comfortable to ride, especially for petite women.  It has a lot of get up and go, so you won't out grow it quickly.  It was my first bike and it is a lot of fun to ride.

agree with both of the previous answers, take the MSF rider course before you go any further.  The course usually uses lightweight bikes no bigger than 250cc.  You can see from the course what feels good about a bike and dosent and then use that when you start shopping.  Also the skills you learn in the course are invaluable on the road.  For your size the only bike i have had personal experionce with is the 250cc honda rebel that i rode when I took the MSF course years ago.  I am 6 foot 220lbs so it wasen't a good choice for me on the road, but it was a nice little bike and they made tons of them so you can find used ones and replacement parts pretty easy.
