NEVER  use WD-40 to clean a chain, I wipe it down good and have used a dab of kerosene to clean hard spots then lubed it. I have used wd to clean hubs. The chemicals in WD  expand o rings.

For the deep cleaning use a little full Straight Simple Green and a old tooth brush or a parts cleaning brush. You can use this to clean your funked up chain. It is safe and can be diluted to the point of a mouth wash. Not that you should.....lol.

For your chain......never use WD40 as a chain lube.
Go down to your local bike shop and buy a can of chain lube, the kind that you put on after you have ridin the bike, while the chain is hot, never cold. This allows the product to seal in the rollers and will not sling all over your wheel, swing arm, and the back of your fender and expensive jacket or passenger.I recommend PJ-1, There are so many more brands for about ten bucks.
