I can put the key in the lock, but i can't turn it to open or close the door. I can open the door from the inside and also open the passenger door. Is it a fairly common problem with an easy fix or do I have to change the lock?

The car is a bmw 318 from 1996.

sounds like a  lock rod has come off inside the door see if you can get the door open from inside and remove the door pad to Access the locking mechanism, work the door and see if you notice the lock moving inside the door and see if you can see anything that has come adrift ,hope this helps

Take it to your BMW dealer, you have probably had an attempted break-in which has broken something.Good Luck.

Locks stick, spray it to see if it will loosen. If it wont come good its probably worn out. Sometimes you can swap the passenger side lock with the drivers side so at least that door will open properly.
